Report: Talks with Matsuzaka break down
http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/6257138
Here's what $51.11 million might buy the Boston Red Sox — absolutely nothing. According to a report in the Boston Herald, negotiations between the Red Sox and Japanese pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka have broken down. Citing a source familiar with the talks, the Herald said unless there is an abrupt change of course, Matsuzaka will not be signing with Boston before Thursday's midnight deadline. Last month, Boston bid $51.11 million for exclusive negotiating rights with the Japanese star. If the Red Sox are not able to reach an agreement with Matsuzaka, they will not have to pay a penny of their winning bid. The Herald's source laid the blame for the stalled negotiations at the feet of Matsuzaka's agent, Scott Boras, saying Boras has been unwilling to negotiate and has even acted disinterested in making a deal. According to the Herald, it is believed the Red Sox's initial offer was in the range of $7 or $8 million per year for between four to six years, while Boras was asking for approximately $15 million per year. |

Re: Report: Talks with Matsuzaka break down
I am surprised Boras is only asking for 15 million a year. Given the current market, the actual player in Matsuzaka should probably get around 25 to 30 million a year.

[/ QUOTE ] I lol'ed at this. Maybe, just MAYBE the source was Lucchino. I'm sure Boras is just as interested in getting something done as he is with his other clients and is using his usual tactics of waiting the other guys out because he knows they have no leverage. Clear bosox bias in this article for me. |

[/ QUOTE ] The deal is going to get done, and Matsuzaka is getting nowhere near 15 million dollars annually. Matsuzaka has two choices: 1) Sign with the Red Sox for whatever they offer. 2) Return to Japan for a year and get around 3 million in guaranteed money, wait until next year, and hope a team that feels compelled to overpay for him makes a big overbid for the posting fee. Walking away from 50 million dollars here not only for himself, but also 51 million for Seibu is simply not going to happen. Edit: To simplify, when the second highest bidder is 1 year, 3 million dollars, the Red Sox offer is very competitive. |
