$0.50/$1 how bad did I really play? how bad did HE really play?
Caught my river card with a 21% chance. Double checked the math after the hand and maybe I made the wrong choice on the turn and got lucky. What do you think?

I see about 5 mistakes you made this hand.
1. you're a short stacker 2. you are a calling station 3. you are a calling station 4. you are a calling station 5. your poker math skills are suffering |

Re: $0.50/$1 how bad did I really play? how bad did HE really play?
Please don't post the results of the hand, as it skews the quality of the responses you get. Also please don't post the screen names of your opponents. You might want to read the FAQ sticky.
I think the turn call is definitely a mistake, and the flop call is less of a mistake, but still a small one. On the flop we have two overcards, and a gutshot to the ass-end of a straight. If you have a read that Villain makes continuation bets a lot, then calling the flop and re-evaluating on the turn is okay. But if you think Villain doesn't get out of line too much, folding the flop is probably best. The turn call is pretty bad... for the math you've illustrated. Welcome to the forums. |

this is terrible on all streets. you need to work on the fundamental strategies involved in NLHE.

Re: $0.50/$1 how bad did I really play? how bad did HE really play?
First of all don't buy in short. If you're uncomfortable buying in for $100 then just move down to 50NL. As for your play:
Generally reraise preflop. Otherwise fold. The only time I call is in late position, and even then rarely. Hopefully you'll be buying in full in the future. As is a reraise preflop puts you in a tougher spot sometimes with a short stack, but it's still better than calling. Don't make a habit of floating the flop. A float isn't terrible right here if you expect him to give up after continuation betting, but usually you should just fold. On the turn, he fired 2 streets so you can give up. He had 34 here, but a lot of time he will have AA, KK, or AK, so even if you improve on the river, no matter what card comes, you won't be 100% sure when you sucked out and when you haven't. Just fold. On the river, you are probably winning but you only bet $10 into a $50 pot. You should be more since even though you will get called less often, you will make more each time he calls. For instance, with his range (which includes 99,TT, and JJ), he will call a $20 bet more than half as often as a $10 bet. In fact, not much calls $10 that wouldn't call $20 (he just happened to have one of the few hands where a $10 bet might be better). One question for you: what were you going to do if he check raised the river? You would have had $21 and the pot would have been $60. You would probably have to call a shove. So you risked your whole stack to make an extra $10 by betting. I'm not saying you shouldn't have bet -- I would almost never check -- I'm just saying bet more because you let him off easy. Remember any time you make a decision in NLHE you need to have a plan -- what do I do if he check raises? What do I do on the next street, etc. |
