You got 4 big bets out of him with (hopefully) the better hand. But if you 3-bet on the 3rd round and bet the river you get the same amount. 3-betting lets him occasionally try a semibluff cap to try to induce a break or fold. Though this never works, does it? If he calls your check-raise he's calling the 3-bet.

If you're beat then 3-betting on 3rd costs you 5 bets total (you call the cap and a river bet.)

If you're beat then your check/raise line costs you 5 bets total unless he wimps out with #2 or #3, or you fold to the reraise. I don't think the savings here justifies all the times he's happy to take a free showdown with an 8.

I played this hand like a chicken with its head cut off, but i think what i was going for was i didnt want him to call my 3bet on 3rd round then break his 8. Then on 4th round just fold when he misses or raise when he hits. Also, if he has #3 or #4 he'll 4 bet 3rd round and i will have to call down, losing 5bets, the same amount if he 3bets my river checkraise. Also, I feel my calling 3rd and standing pat OOP might lead him to believe his 8 is good and I'm going to call his value bet. I feel like playing it this way encourages him to keep the worst hand and bet it with no more draws left.

At these limits I think the 3bet, bet river line is more profitable in the long run. Like Mark said, no one is going to break even a rough 87 here and you risk losing two bets on the river if your oppenent decides its safer to check behind with his rough 8.

How did you get an extra bet? 2+2 does not equal 3+1?
There is some metagame benefits to occasioannly playing strong hands on the turn in the same way you would play a 96532 hand for example. I do feel your going to miss a lot of action overall but you will get some freeshowdowns when people will fear your river check raise which will protect you somewhat.

I checkraise a lot of rivers for this reason, but I wouldn't do it with this one. Just too many 8xxx3 hands that can't break but will check behind.

It's not a sexy if you weren't the last aggressor on the turn. As far as being the best play:

Is he folding anything to a 3-bet which he's valuebetting the river with? Probably not.
