Default Ladies & Gentlemen, Bud Selig

From Paul Sullivan's article in today's Chicago Tribune:

"I've heard for years we have too much product out there"
- Bud Selig

Article where Commissioner Selig says fans should shut up about the Direct TV deal

We have a commissioner who is basically saying that there's plenty of baseball to watch, so you really shouldn't complain that MLB is selling out a large population of its fanbase in the Direct TV/Extra Innings deal. The fact that fans who rely on Extra Innings to get their favorite team's broadcasts who don't currently subscribe to Direct TV are being shut out isn't apparently a big deal to the commish. Never mind that many fans (NYC residents/apartment dwellers/etc.) have obstacles that prevent Direct TV from even being an option, or that many fans enjoy major savings by being able to get their phone, cable TV & internet service from the same provider. Bud knows best.

In what I'm sure is nothing more than mere coincidence, the president of Direct TV is Chase Carey, a former VP of marketing/broadcasting for Major League Baseball...

I think that's a bit much. I am not a huge fan, but one of the worst things is pushing it a bit too far.

The guy should be fired for the All-Star nonsense alone, though.

The wild card + interleague play + lying about the health of franchises + the All Star bull [censored] + being a stooge for the owners = glad he's retiring in '09

Wildcard=awsome
Interleague play=awsome
The all-star "[censored]"=awsome
being a stoge for the owners=his job

I don't know anything about the health of the franchises, so I can't comment on that.

The rest sucks IMO. I'm not a huge fan of the NYM vs NYY but, whatever. Interleague is just decent. All-star game having home field is awful. Maybe it's because I'm a National League fan and I don't think the N.L. allstars have ever won the game in the past century, so maybe that interferes with my opinion of it.

Wild card is fine, especially in baseball. It's not like basketball, where you play 82 games and a 30-52 team makes the [censored] playoffs. That's a [censored] joke of a system.

Interleague play, meh. I could take it or leave it.

Health of franchises is a big thing, yeah.

I think the Wild Card is definitely the least crappy thing of his tenure. I just like having a 2 division race.

I think interleague play gives advantages to teams who get to play continually weak teams in "rivalry" series.
