question about weighing the odds - yao
Hello,
Yesterday, I won an online tournament, and the price was a copy of the book "Weighing the Odds in Hold'em Poker" by King Yao. I did not receive it yet, so I was wondering what the book is like. Is it useful/advisable to read for a beginner and a micro-stakes player? So far, my path of reading is the following: 1) GSIH 2) ITHE 3) TOP 4) MLHEP (middle limit hold'em poker - ciaffone) - I know that it might look strange that I placed this book before SSHE, but I saw some good reasons to do so. Ask me, and I'll look them up for you. 5) SSHE 6) HEPFAP 7) HGIYLHEP (how good is your limit hold'em poker? - yacobs) I'm currently in step 2: I'm reading and understanding ITH. Where should I add the book? I googled a bit, and the book looks very promosing, but I can't place it. If you have any other comments (other order of reading, adding another book somewhere, etc.), feel free to let me know! thanks all |

Re: question about weighing the odds - yao
It is a very good book although not necessarily the best book for a beginner.

Re: question about weighing the odds - yao
I'm not necessarily a big fan of your order already but I'm sure others could argue the benefits of it.
I would throw WTO somewhere after SSHE. For a beginner, I think that reading WTO before SSHE could lead to confusion. I would also put MLH after SSH but that's just me. I might switch HGIYLH to immediately after SSHE. I think it's a good follow-up quiz-book to follow-up on many of the SSHE ideas. |

Other opinions of the order?
SSH -> WTO -> HGIYLH or SSH -> HGIYLH -> WTO I'm finishing SSH probably tomorrow. I was planning to go with SSH -> WTO -> HGIYLH. Not so sure anymore... (No, I'm not reading it again yet!) |

I just hope we have good new books in the future so that we can have more acronyms.
Your ordering seems okay, but I haven't read MLH. I would think that you could put it after HEPFAP. I really need to get around to reading the Caiffone books. |

These acronyms are killing me! Does it that hard to write out their full titles? Sorry, I'm keen on this game but but some of the jargon gives me the $%^*s!
Good luck with your books no matter how they may be abbreviated. |

Re: question about weighing the odds - yao
I think your reading list is messed up. Its like reading 12 recipes and then trying to bake a cake. Read and re-read one recipe until you fully understand it before moving on. I've read SSHE seven times and still go back to it. You would get more out of studing the crap out of one good book than reading 10. The King Yao book is very good but I don't think you should read it until after SSHE.

Re: question about weighing the odds - yao
Thanks all for your replies. It seems I'll have to wait with the book until I finished SSHE.
djhoneybear: I agree with what you are saying, I simply gave a list of books I wanted to study. I did not say in which time frame I wanted to do that. As a matter of fact, I believe that reading TOP before SSHE is a good thing, as it will make reading SSHE easier. SSHE will be re-read multiple times, no doubt about that. |
