Default Random / impractical / farfetched projects you have in your head

And the factors that make them unworkable.

I humbly present three.

1) Composing a set of madrigals out of the complete works of William Blake.

INSPIRATION: William Blake ("Songs of Innocence," "Songs of Experience," "Never Seek to Tell Thy Love," noted illustrator / lunatic) is my all-time favorite poet. I was in the chorus all four years of high school (no, you're a queer.)

OBSTACLES: I don't know anything about composition or music theory, just a vague sense of chord progression. It might well have been already done, or something like it. Stands a high chance of ending up awful.

2) A monument commemorating Juneteenth and the liberation of Texas slaves, on the University of Texas campus. Ideally I would design the whole thing & write the inscription ('these brave Americans,' 'holy cause of freedom,' etc. etc.)

INSPIRATION: There's a whole row of commemorative statuary on the UT Main Mall that's almost nothing but Confederate slaveholders. It's a point of controversy. I think this would provide a neat symbolic counterbalance (bigger & better ftw!) without having to tear anything down.

OBSTACLES: Like I know anything about sculpture. Mediocre sketcher at best. No fundraising experience, or, really, inclination to try to flog people for money, for that matter.

3) Circumnavigating the Mediterranean. Start at one Pillar of Hercules, walk / jeep / bike to the other.

INSPIRATION: Lots of historical reading. Morocco, Carthago, Tripolis, Malta, Alexandria, Byblos, Jerusalem, Haifa, Tyrus, Cyprus, Ionia, Athenae, Sparta, the Adriatic coast, Crete, Italy, Marseilles, Valencia, the Balearic Isles (with which I am obsessed, for some reason), Gibraltar. Sounds pretty rockin'.

OBSTACLES: Six figures, fluency in four languages (say, English, French, Arabic, Greek?), significant motorcycle / 4WD experience and some serious time at the pistol range (LOL, North Africa unarmed!) seem like the minimum requirements to make this happen.

#1 and #3 sound very cool, esp #3. You really think you'd need six figures to do that?

What I really want to do...

Hike for several weeks in the Andes mountains, camping every night, surviving off of food that I find/hunt/bring with me, take many pictures, read a long book or something on the way. The irritating thing is that it's extremely dangerous to hike for that long by oneself, yet it's irksome to find someone else to do it with me. I'd rather chance it alone than bring someone who's poopoo attitude would [censored] the whole trip up.

Inspiration: that would just rule, also watching hours upon hours of various nature shows on the discovery channel, also generally enjoying hiking and being fed up with living in flat, boring western NY.

Obstacles: the money to travel to the Andes, lacking a tent, good knife, reliable digital camera. Not many obstacles to be honest as I am thinking about it.

PROJECT: Start a new cable channel targeted at men (The "Guy Network") or some such. Show bad-ass uncut movies during the day, bad-ass original programming at night, maybe porn and/or GGW stuff late night. Compete with HBO and Cinemax, not F/X or Spike.

OBSTACLES: Um, a billion dollars. Introducing a new cable channel is apparently very hard, lot of red tape/licensing/infrastructure nightmares to deal with. Certain heavy static from the FCC, which regulates TV content (IMO a blatant violation of the First A., but what do I know.)

Your inspiration had nothing to do with this?

Purely coincidental; I've had this floating around since college.

1) Restore my decrepit Mustang.

2) Build and drive a race car, either drag or dirt track.
