Might makes right?
[ QUOTE ]
In terms of morality; those who are the strongest will rule others and have the power to determine right and wrong. By this definition, the phrase manifests itself in a normative sense. This precise meaning is used to define a moral code for society to follow in the works of Nietzsche and others, discussions of social Darwinism, Weberian theme of the authority of the state (e.g. 'Wirtschaft und Gesellschaft'). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Might_makes_right [/ QUOTE ] |

Re: Might makes right?
Indeed, might is the only thing that makes right as any right is simply a social construct anyhow.

[/ QUOTE ] I agree with the second part, but not the first. the mighty can do things that violate socialy constructed notions of right and wrong, and their might doesn't make it right. |

[/ QUOTE ] But their might is what made those socially constructed notions of right in the first place, that just means they're changing the definition of what's right. It would only be "wrong" to defy these notions for someone who was not responsible for creating them. |
