Default Where to adopt a dog

I live in New York city and I've been trying to adopt a bulldog for awhile. I can't find any within 200 miles and every time I find an ad on the internet, the owner is a missionary living Cameroon. Seriously! People say "I'm sorry I'm out of the country and am teaching Christianity in West Africa. I can send the dog by mail for 500 dollars". Can someone suggest a place to look for a breed of dog inexpensively or a place that I can adopt one not for a "good christian home"?

I figure since we're all 2+2ers, I'll get some sympathy.

Thanks

Here you go.

Bulldog Rescue

I am sure there are others near you. You are just looking in the wrong place. By looking through the papers you are likely to find poorly bred animals either from puppy mills or backyard breeders.

With Bulldogs this isn't just a matter of being a nit. It is very much in your best interest to get either an older dog, or one from a very good breeder. Bulldogs are prone to a number of health problems and poor breeding greatly exacerbates those issues. You could end up spending less for the animal initially and then dropping thousands on vet bills.

I'm assuming you've tried sites like 1800SaveaPet.com and petfinder.com?

In my recent searches it seems the best way to look is to start with that site, and then from there youll find breed specific rescue organizations, and these people are dog nuts and all seem to know each other so if they dont have what youre looking for ask if they know anyone who might.

Bulldogs appeared to be pretty rare finds for adoption (in mass/RI when I did a search a few months ago), and I imagine will probably require a relatively expensive donation unless you're lucky. A lot of the rescue leagues are pretty adamant about making sure the dog finds a good home as well, the ones I looked at required an inspection of my house and yard for any adoption, making the donation price a little steeper. Not sure if its a universal thing though.

Good luck.

This is a great place in Massachusetts with puppies already fixed/vaccinated, etc and I really like how they operate
