So this morning 3 girls and I are walking out of their apartment to go get some breakfast after quite a bender the night before. As we're walking through the kitchen one of them notices all the empty beer bottles they had bagged up were gone and heres how the conversation goes.

Whitney: oh did u turn those bottles in to the recycling center?

Ashley: yeah I did. 5 cents each woo hoo

Christina: so how much did u get?

Ashley: four fifteen

Whitney: Four dollars and fifteen cents? thats it, but there were soooooo many.

short pause while they are all obviously trying to do the calculation in their heads

Me: 83 apparently

then they all go off about how smart I am at Math and how they're amazed I could come up with it and admit they were trying to but couldnt.

One asked how I did that and I'm a bit embarrassed to be honest and just say " divide by 5" since I couldnt think of anything else to say.

They stare for a second and I say " well u could just think of it as 20 per dollar also then just add it". They look confused at this line of thinking, get frustrated, give up and we head out the door.

There's this game for nintendo DS called Brain Age, that's supposed to test your intelligence. The math section is more a test of speed than anything because the problems are so easy.

Anyways, this girl i know (junior in college) was playing and absolutely struggling with single digit addition and subtraction. Like, 8+6, 9-5.

It was so brutal.

For what it's worth, many dudes would struggle with the nickel addition too. Similarly, most people struggle to compute the proper tip at a restaurant too.
