Maximizing the river... or more on limpy tables
Hi All,
Following up on Barry’s great thread on limpy tables, I have a related question: How to maximize a lucky river where there’s been little action. Table is limpy, loose, weak and passive. UTG (t2840) UTG+1 (t1260) MP1 (t1310) CO (t2630) BU (t2490) SB (t1160) Hero (t1810) Preflop: Hero is BB with 9 [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] , 3 [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] UTG calls t50, 2 folds, CO calls t50, 1 fold, SB completes, Hero checks. Flop: (t200) J [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img], T [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img], 4 [img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] SB checks, Hero checks, UTG checks, CO checks Turn: (t200) 8 [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] SB checks, Hero checks, UTG bets t50, CO folds, SB folds, Hero calls River: (t300) 2 [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] Hero??? First, was it a mistake not to sweeten the pot on the turn? Second, on the river, is the better psychology to shove, hoping to represent a bluff? Or to bet ~100, hoping that he’ll take 3-1 odds with his KT or whatever ridiculous thing he has? Or to check, hoping that he’ll think we missed a straight draw and bet out? And if we check and he bets 50 or 100, do we raise big or small? Thanks! |

Re: Maximizing the river... or more on limpy tables
I probably bet like 200 here, hoping a T decides I'm full of it. If he raises, that sucks but I still probably call in case of a slowplayed set/straight.
I think checking here is pretty bad as most of the time he's got one pair and will almost definitely check behind. |

Agree with 200. Villian's turn bet looks really weak and I doubt he has a big hand so he will check the river pretty often.

Re: Maximizing the river... or more on limpy tables
Cheburaska,
Hell no you don't want to sweeten the pot on the turn. Why would you want to do that? As for the river...Don't think that people are so stupid they won't think you might be on a flush draw. Just realize that he could have been betting because he picked up a better FD. Bet about 200 on the river, and hope he calls. For the love of god, don't shove or you'll only get called by a flush. In fact, if you bet and he shoves, you should fold. |

Re: Maximizing the river... or more on limpy tables
Thanks All!
Yimymammer, I'm computer illiterate, or I'd link. But its a very hot thread on MTT yesterday and today (you've probably already looked at it) called, approximately, "Non-standard play and how to fend against it" Austiger, thanks. But my assumption was that he would suspect a flush draw, and the question is how to get him to bet anyway (i.e. the idea of the shove was not value, but to get him to think we were bluffing). In any case, the consensus seems to that a smallish value bet with a chance of getting a call is the best I could do here. FWIW, I actually bet 100 and got a call, but I was kicking myself that I wasn't able to get more out of this hand. |
