Anyone Here Read Martin Amis?
I am reading his latest, House of Meetings. It is, of course, beautifully and skillfully written. It lacks, however, the thing that I love so much about Amis' work: real humor, generally of the scathing variety.
If you have not read his stuff, you might start with Money, which is masterfully written and genuinely funny. London Fields is absolutely brilliant in every way. Try it next. It's substantial, and worth the effort. Then, you might want to try the non-fiction, Einstien's Monsters, and Koba The Dread. The former is about nuclear weapons, the latter about Stalin. Both very good reads. I even enjoyed his older stuff like The Rachel Papers, Dead Babies, and Success. IMPORTANT: Skip Night Train. It is inexplicably horrifyingly terrible. Yellow Dog didn't do much for me, either. Anyone read Amis? |

I've read Einstein's Monsters and (gulp) Night Train. Don't think I finished Night Train.
I gave Martin a shot after reading Kingsley's "Lucky Jim." |

[/ QUOTE ] Yeah, that Kingsley could sure write too. You might try Martin's "Experience, A Memoir," which is all about his relationship with his father at the end of his father's life. And I guess if you can forgive him for (gulp) Night Train, go straight to London Fields or Money, I think. Enjoy. |
