Las Vegas to Denver

Tomorrow I will be driving form Las Vegas to Denver. Taking the 15 north out of Vegas to the 70 east to Denver. Has anyone taken this route recently? I was wondering about gas prices along the route and anything onyone would recommmend as a "must see."

I haven't made the trip recently, but in Oct 2004 I did the Boulder -> Vegas -> Boulder round trip... there isn't much worth stopping at, but I definitely recommend doing as much of I-70 as possible in daylight. The views are simply beautiful. Be careful, there's a 110 mile stretch of I-70 in Utah that doesn't have any gas stations. I believe it's the stretch between Salina and Green River (exits 56 and 160), but there should be signs along the highway warning you.

Gas in Denver is right around $2.75 / gallon, but if you need to stop in the mountains expect a 10 or 20 cent premium.

i agree with everything elitegimp said. i did this drive last spring and it only cemented my belief that Utah is the most beautiful and the most retarded place in the US.

the most notable sight is the intersection of I-15 and I-70. at the junction of these two large vehicular arteries, there is absolutely NOTHING. you have to drive 4 miles just to get to a gas station. pretty trippy.

you can skip the dinosaur museum somewhere near the CO border. i stopped there to pee and was impressed only by the size of the McDonald's across the street.

final thought: once you get through Grand Junction, CO, *slow the [censored] down*. night had fallen, i was still going like 85 and singing and playing "Decemberists - Mariner's Revenge Song" at the top of my lungs/speakers when all of a sudden the road got all twisty and scary. i very nearly ended up chewed alive by the jaws of a giant whale.

IRC, there is a sign that tells you no service stations for 110 miles, going to vegas, but not necessarily the other way. hopefully they changed this, just make sure you have enough gas going through utah.

tyler was absolutely correct about the grand junction thing. there is a sharp sharp turn, that is hard to see at night, cause the traffic goign the other way, can sometimes blind you with their lights, as the roads are not on the same elevation. i've almost ran my car into the wall here. be careful, but it's like a 10-11 hour drive, so unless you leave super, super early, it's hard to avoid driving this area at night.

When i drove out here from NY in 2004 I thought the most horrible place I had ever saw was Utah. Nothing I have ever seen can compare to the ugliness of the portion of Utah that traveled through. If I were driving to Denver I would go two days out of my way to avoid that strip of Utah.

Well I have to get there becasue I have orientation on Wed so I have to get my gaming card by Tues.
