I liked the original Spartacus.
The History Channel made their own version of the story a few years ago and I watched it a bunch of times too. Several of the actors in it went on to play characters in Rome, the HBO series. Also the slave-girl who plays Spartacus' love interest was mad hot. Crassus, the guy who led legions against Spatarcus' revolt was a really interesting historical figure. He was the third member of the first triumvirate, a long with Caesar and Pompeii, and was likely the wealthiest man in Rome (maybe the Roman empire?) during his adult life. I read somewhere that he built his fortune through real estate, sometimes using strong-arm tactics as leverage. For instance, he controlled a five-hundred man firefighting crew. Whenever there would be a fire burning down someone's house, Crassus would be alerted, and he'd bring his crew to the house. He wouldn't put out the fire though, he'd negotiate with the honor of the house while it was burning down, and would buy it for next to nothing since it would be worth nothing once it had burnt down, and then once he bought it he would instruct his men to put out the fire. |
