2 Decks in play for Cash Games?
Do most home cash games use 2 decks, with one being shuffled by the previous dealer while one is in play? My typical home games are 4-6 players and we almost never have a need for 2 decks but lately I've been in some games where the hosts and other players insisted on 2 decks and I felt like it really was more trouble than it was worth as I'd end up having to shuffle all the way through playing the next hand.
I can understand doing it in tourneys but ring games? Thoughts? Opinions? Tips and tricks? |

I like having 2 decks. Most of the fish at my game are more concerned about drinking. They game goes incredibly slow. It is nice to have the second deck ready to go so you can limit the amount of time wasted.

Two decks is the way to go with > 4 ppl, you never have to wait for a shuffle. The only argument I come across is do you shuffle before you deal, or after? I prefer to have the previous (button-2) dealer shuffle so the subsequent dealer cuts to the new dealer. Keeps things moving.

Re: 2 Decks in play for Cash Games?
I prefer using one deck. In my home games, I'm usually the dealer and would use the same dealing/shuffling procedures used in the casinos.
The players in my game prefer using 2 decks to speed up the play. My rifle. rifle, strip, rifle, cut is pretty fast. The problems I have with the two decks are: 1. The shuffling takes place out of sight from most players. Or at least some are distracted since they are in a hand and don't notice. 2. Most of the players can't shuffle off the table without cards being exposed during the shuffle. 3. A large portion of the time, I need to ask if the other deck has been shuffled and people forget if they did or not, causing a re-shuffle. 4. If the person shuffling happens to be in the current hand, the cards don't get shuffled anyway. So eventhough I like the one deck, one dealer method, I let other players do the shuffle to keep them happy and the game going. I trust that my friends won't try to cheat. If the people in your game aren't trustworthy, then use one deck or don't play. |

Re: 2 Decks in play for Cash Games?
Its very simple for one person to shuffle and deal and the SB (the dealer to be) shuffle another deck while the current hand is being played out. That eliminates the need for passing around of decks from dealer-2 to the new dealer. Very simple, very effective, saves you time and time=money

Re: 2 Decks in play for Cash Games?
Without a dealer (as in Lunger's case), two decks is the way to go. Just make sure that someone cuts the cards and you will not have problems... And don't let people get away with the "they're good" deck tap instead of cutting. There is an old saying -- trust everyone, but cut the cards.

Re: 2 Decks in play for Cash Games?
I've always used two decks in my game and we have a set dealer. Typically the BB shuffles. Since BB acts last preflop, if you're good you can pretty much get the deck shuffled before it's your turn to act. Dealer then cuts deck. Some of my dealers will even throw in another shuffle and then cut. We also use cut cards. I should add that my games are basically among friends, or well known acquaintances, so I feel rather safe in this regard.
If we rotated the deal I think I would still have BB shuffle and then have dealer pick a player to cut. I'm not big on SB shuffling his own deck to deal (even if he's going to give it to another player to cut, especially if it's always the same player. Like guy to dealers right.) For a game of less than 6 players two decks might be a little much. You might try having the first player to fold take up the shuffle |

In our game, BB shuffles (same reason as above). Previous dealer cuts.

Then I went to a game that only had one deck and wanted to gouge my eyes out after one orbit. After every hand you have to wait for someone to grab the board, muck, and rest of the deck, then shuffle, cut, and deal. With two decks you can have the next hand dealt while someone does all the above. I swear we didn't get in more than 15 hands an hour. |

I'd much rather have the rest of the players getting drunker and more tired than I would to get in a few extra deals per hour. I guess the consensus here is that 2 decks is perfectly fine so I won't say anything else in the games I play that use them but I still prefer a one deck game. |
