online play: sng vs ring
I have a question about online play and am hoping for some imput. I am an oldtimer, been playing poker for over 30 years. I dont claim to be a superstar, but in all modesty, i have always done alright.
I play excusivly online now, sngs in the 50 dollar range are my bread and butter, but every time i play the ring games, i really struggle. Am i crazy or is the competition tougher in the rings as opposed to the sngs.Is it just a different approach that i am missing? Its real baffeling for me cause for 25 years all i knew was your basic ring games. |

Re: online play: sng vs ring
yeah they are harder b/c the stacks are deeper so post flop play becomes more important. in tourney's it's not hard for people to get 1/5 of their stack or more in b/f the flop

Re: online play: sng vs ring
cash games require great post flop play, which is the opposite of sit n gos where you become so committed preflop that post flop play doesnt matter as much, most people will say that sit n gos are a completely different form of poker than cash games which is definitely true.
I was a sit n goer about 2 years ago and started playing cash games and got demolished, i think this is just the rite of passage most go through, you will improve but it takes time. edit: also learning post flop play will be very beneficial to you once you start playing tournaments that start off at stacks high relative to the blinds, its worth learning and you will a different form of poker to play once sit n gos get boring |

Good cash game players have a better all around game than good tourney players |

That doesnt happen in cash games. I cant even play in home game tourneys anymore without being extremely frustrated and annoying. You cant raise, float, or make moves without a hand...you either get cards or dont. |

Re: online play: sng vs ring
yeah,
you guys are all correct.its funny how fast i slipped into some bad play. sng are a poker abberation in all truth i guess,it is just so easy to gravitate toward them cause they are quick and have softer line-ups. but then im looking for the easiest path to winning so i will stick with them |

Re: online play: sng vs ring
they are an "easier path to winning," since the players tend to be of lower quality, but better players have a bigger advantage in cash games than in tournaments

Re: online play: sng vs ring
I`m not a big fan of online poker but I`ve been playing it for close to 5 years off and on and this is my conclusion on the mater:
- It is believed that only 5%-10% of the online players are consistent winners. I`m leaning more toward 5ish% because of a statement I heard once coming from an employer of one of the biggest poker sites. Now.. my guess is that from those 5% players only a small fraction makes the money from NLHE ring games. It`s just a guess though and I`m basing it on my experience and observation only. I have a much longer B&M experience then my 5 lousy online years and I`m a moderate overall winner in both but the way I see it I just miss way too much of a crucial info online when I play NL. Yes there is a lot of helpful software out there but any experienced player knows what I mean. Limit on the other hand is much more of a math game so it`s perfect for online. It took me a while untiel I figured out that I can make more money playing limit, Horse, Tournaments and even SnGs then NL rings. I think this is true for most of the winners out there. |

[/ QUOTE ] sounds like you're saying you need physical tells to play poker. if that's the case you aren't playing properly. |
