ADR is the replacement of the live dialog w/ overdubbed dialog. it's actually not looping at all. the actor still performs the lines, and does so while watching the video playback from the shoot.

Now that you mention it, my wife said this is exactly what he did. He had to get in character and everything, in order to perfectly duplicate the line. He only had to do one line (there was a siren or helicopter the first time or something), but it took like thirty minutes to get it perfect. Got paid $250 though...not a bad hourly wage.
