I need a reliable router - recommendations?
I think my existing router is about to kick the bucket. I really don't need a wireless, in fact I prefer a regular router so I don't have to worry about anyone hacking in. What's a good model that doesn't disconnect or crash?

Re: I need a reliable router - recommendations?
Draytek are sick good for a non-enterprise class router.
I have a few, the one in work has at least a few K hours uptime on it right now. Other sites not so much - but they don't have a UPS to help them rack up the hours... |

Re: I need a reliable router - recommendations?
I've never even heard of this brand before. European thing or am I just really out of the loop? Checked on Ebay and the only Draytek's being sold were out of the UK. Seems like all I ever see locally are Netgear, SMC, and Linksys.
I guess I should be satisfied with the performance of my existing router (Netgear MR814) as I've had it before wireless G routers started hitting the market. At least 5 years of near constant use. Their tech support is from hell, though. Is a router with UPS necessary as long as it's plugged into a UPS? |

Re: I need a reliable router - recommendations?
I've owned 2 Netgear routers and they've both been extremely reliable. My family also uses Netgear without any problems. I'd say stick with Netgear, failing that get Linksys, it's apparently really good too.

I've had 3 Linksys routers go bad, but they still get good general reviews, so obviously I was doing something wrong. (Is there a better way to reset the router than throw it against the wall?) For a cabled router, I think you probably can't go wrong. Certainly any major brand will do fine. |

LOL, yes your reset methods may have something to do with it. It seems like most of these companies provide similar products and every so often a real lemon makes it's way into the pile (i.e. whatever model SamIAm had.)
Choccypie, what model Netgear were you using? Is it wired or wireless? |

Re: I need a reliable router - recommendations?
I have a linksys that sucks and I need to power on and off all the time, but my dad has one that has been running continuously for 8 months.

My Linksys wrt54g has been running for about 3 years straight with no problems.

Beavis and SamIAm, is the wrt54g the model you were having problems with? What model do you have so I know what to avoid?

For true performance just get an old computer, throw OpenBSD on it, and use that. There are quite a few books out on how to use OBSD as a router. Of course if you have any semblance of a life it might not be practical... |
