Extensions on Papers

I had a pretty long paper due this afternoon that I was going to stay up to write but then I ended up falling asleep and getting zero of it done. I am now going to email my TA and ask for an extension. Should I just be honest and tell him that it will be a lot better if I could have a few extra days or what should I say? This is the first time I have asked for an extension and I have been a good student so far (in my opinion).
