Default Effect of VPN on Wireless Security

If my campus wireless is accessed through a Cisco VPN client by entering my school ID and password, does the fact that it goes through VPN have any effect on the security of the data being transmitted wirelessly? If i were to log on to say a poker site would it be any more safe, or are there any advantages?

Thanks for the help.

Default Re: Effect of VPN on Wireless Security

First a poker site encrypts its data to begin with, so that stream is encrypted. Now you're going through an SSL VPN concentrator it sounds like, which encrypts everything going across the "wire" including the aforementioned already encrypted poker traffic.

Is it more safe? Sure, anytime you double encrypt something its going to be more secure, but as it is, the liklihood someone is going to be sniffing the wireless packets from inside the VPN and grabbing the encrypted data stream to the poker site and breaking that encryption is, well, kind of slim.
