Does the \"wholesome\" poker player exist (anymore)?
With all the stories of degeneracy, shady [censored], and whatnot going around, whom would you consider to still be a wholesome poker player?
Note: I would prefer responses regarding: 1)A name people will recognize either online or named pro 2)Someone you can vouch for personally It's almost hard to define wholesome b/c I tend to think most top-notch poker players who have the money to back it up are/were degenerates at some point to get to the level of income they have. Discuss or ban, b/c this topic may suck . . . I'm tired but dont want to sleep for some odd reason . . either way, i'm cool w/ it. |

You generally only hear of the bad things that happen because they're more exciting news. There're probably a hundred players we'd all know the names of, but you can't think of 90 of them right now because they haven't done anything bad.
But, for the sake of the thread, I nominate Barry Greenstein. Or Greg Raymer. |

I don't know if I'm "wholesome", but I believe I stick to a code of sorts. Something like this:
1. Never softplay, show cards or announce hands. Many players that play together often can find it easier to softplay each other, which IMO opens the door wide for angle shooting. I could write 10 pages on this, actually. 2. Always tip a dealer who does the job well, and show respect. 3. Never tip a dealer who interferes with the play of a hand, or gets involved in table banter while in the box. 4. Pay my debts as fast as humanly possible. For me this means never take a bet I can't pay off that day. Anyone who has prop betted with me will attest that I pay instantly. 5. Never expect lent money to return to you in the same manner you'd return it to a lender. However, if you need to borrow, pay as fast as you have the means to do so. 6. Don't borrow. 7. Don't get involved in ethics or rulings on hands that don't affect you while they are happening. Allow the ruling to take place, then if you disagree, consult the floor privately for clarity. 8. Don't gloat when you win, don't pout when you lose. |

Re: Does the \"wholesome\" poker player exist (anymore)?
poker players are by definition thrill seekers. we like pushing the ticket to some extent, and all like to live in the now. i never think where ill be in 10 yrs because i dont know if ill be around. and besides u cant take money with u when u die. but if i had to name someone, names that come to mind are allen cunningham, patrik antonius, brian townsend, and phil hellmuth. i mean we all strive for wholesomeness, the million dollar house, but the means to that end, gambling, sitting in a cardroom, conversations with people that aren't in tune with the rest of the world, i.e. cnn, politics, benchmark mathematics, medicine, retirement, overpopulation, and future of mankind as a whole, isn't by definition wholesome.
