20 hands in, lots of small pots and cont. bets. Check on flop is kinduv obv. I think, check call on turn (I put him on As combos or QJ, AJ. On river, I try to make a value bet in hopes I don't get taken off hand. Now I'm confused. Tell me, oh wise posters, how did I [censored] this hand up and should I call?

The river is completely read dependent. It would take a pretty sick read for me to call this.

Barry [/ QUOTE ] I think I would normally lead the turn and check/call the river in case he had a naked spade. I figure a lot of jacks will try to value bet the river anyways. That all in is weirding me out though. |

River value bet? Looks more like a blocking bet to me. I like a river chk/call. I agree w/ the above post that most J's are value betting anyway, and that checking gives him a chance to bluff.
This has a lot to do with reads. I think a river (blocking/value)bet/fold is the worst. Check/calling and betting to induce a bluff raise are best. Your hand doesn't look strong and you have the best hand you could have that you would take this line with therefore if you're betting the river I think you have to call a push. I think you played it perfectly to induce a bluff and possibly get max value if your opponent is a thinking player. However, this is only a 20$ so I would guess your opponent isn't great, so I would chk/call the river. |

Why would you want to call this raise? I would also check-fold the river unless he bet real small.

As played, river is an easy fold for me.
I don`t like the board at all. The flop is bad for you and the turn makes it even worse. => I would try to end the hand cheaply. Imho, there are 2 possibilities to achieve that goal: I) Bet/fold the river. Although I would make it to 300-350, your play isn`t bad. Advantage: I extracts value from a pair of jacks, which will probably call you. It should slow down a pair of kings (which might be more expansive if you just check/call). Disadvantage: Your giving stronger hands an opportunity to raise you. II) The second is check/call. Advantage: You catch some bluffs from time to time. + You will have a showdown and learn something about your opponent and the way he plays his hands. Disadvantage: You will find yourself in a tough spot if your opponent fires a big bet (2/3 pot+) at you. Personally I prefer number II). |

I should have check/called the river for pot control, to induce a bet that I can manage calling. Basically, 200 is a block bet which I made because I wanted AJ/1010 to call thinking that I missed my flush draw or I wanted villain to try to push me off the hand because he missed his. That bet of 150 really threw me for a loop - so small, I didn't think he had a king, I thought it was a weak QJ/AJ/1010/As/Qs.
I timed out and called the push - As8s. Guh. Barry |
