This is a CRT, right? If so, it'll only get worse. Buy a LCD.

P.S. I could be worse.

I had a CRT monitor fail with smoke and sparks once (All electronic devices contain magic smoke. If the magic smoke leaks out, they quit working.). I managed to unplug it before it burned down my house, but it was pretty scary.

When I was a dorm's fix-it guy in college, we had a kid report that his monitor was making popping sounds. When I checked it out, as soon as I touched the power button, it started making HUGE cracking sounds, like thunder, about two per second.

I fell out of my chair turning it off, and informed him that his monitor was dead and that in the future he probably shouldn't casually refer to these as "popping sounds".
