Default Buying domains and hoping for type-ins - Which host to use?

I'd like to buy a bunch of domains and see if they get any type-ins. I've never bought a domain and I've never used a host. Where should I look for it? What should I keep in mind? Thanks...

Only suggestion would be to register the same domain name across as many top levels as you can to cover the spread.

I don't think it very much matters. You are looking for people accidentally finding your domain, basically. Site advertisement is of no importance, neither is performance. DNS registration can be done by another entity and is what actually matters here. People don't stumble upon domains by typing in IP addresses, they stumble upon them by using a name. They could careless if the IP belongs to Sprint at 216.x.x.x or Level3 at 4.x.x.x. As long as the name exists in every conceivable fashion, thats what matters and is whta will capture the type-ins.

ok... for a few actual helpful answers

dreamhost
hostgator

Those are the most popular for people new to hosting and domaining. Neither is the cheapest or the best you'll ever find, but they have good support and should fit your needs.

Obviously you'll want a plan that allows hosting multiple domains.

What an original idea! There can't be more than 7 or 800 other people already doing this.

Yes, I think you probably caught me indulging in a bit of hyperbole, but it seems every time I mis-type a URL, and occasionally when I follow a link from Google, I end up at some web site offering to sell me the domain name.
