I'm pissed about this because I feel it happens a lot. Here is the story:
I live in NYC. Had dinner with two friends. Food was blah and service was absolutely terrible. Bill came to $194 and I tipped 10% ($20). I looked at my credit card bill 3 weeks later and the total was $10 higher. THe breakdown had me tipping $30, instead of $20. $10 is not a big deal, but it pisses me off that these restaurants get away with this all the time. If one of my friends had not mentioned at the time to make sure to check my bill at the end of the month, I would have never noticed. I reported the issue to my credit card company and to the Better Business Bureau. I hope the restaurant gets fined for this. Has this happened to any of you? The one thing I learned with this experience is that I will be one of those angry senior citizens writing complaint letters all day long. Can't wait! PS - I generally tip 20% for decent service. |

Should have talked to the manager, they would have hooked you up.

I'm thinking about calling the restaurant tomorrow. Not sure I will get much from the manager. Many NYC restaurants feel they are granting you a privilege by allowing you to eat there.

Some places auto add 15% for the tip. Find out if they're one of those places.

Taking more off your credit card than they were supposed to sounds like stealing to me. Your original tip was very generous, not that it is relevant. I'd be pissed.
