Buying a PS3
Just got my PokerStars cashout and probably tomorrow I'm going to go pick up my PS3.
just wanted opinions on weather the 80gb version is better than the 60 and worth the extra hundred bucks. I have read something about different emulation systems in order to play older games between the two, but need to read up on which one is better and why and if it really makes a difference. Any opinions will be helpful |

Re: Buying a PS3
The 60gb has the Emo chip which is the emulation chip. The 80gb are using software emulation, like the Euro/Pal PS3's. They say the hardware emulation is better, and there have been complaints with the software emulation, since it doesnt cover as many games. People do say most major ps2 games are covered by the software emulator though. Unless you have a huge ps2 collection, and no ps2, I would say it really doesn't matter. After all aren't you mostly buying it for next gen games?

Re: Buying a PS3
I think i'm buying it just to buy it.
Until the PS3 actually has some good games come out, i'll just be playing a bunch of Ps2 games that I haven't gotten around to beating. I'll pick up Ninja Gaiden, but that's it so far for the nex gen games. At least I'll have a blue ray player no? haha |

Re: Buying a PS3
Why not try a 360? There are quite a few really good games already out with with big hits like Bioshock and Halo3 coming out.
In terms of Blu ray its great if thats why you are buying it, but there is no clear winner in the HD format war. Growing up during the beta/vhs wars, I'm waiting awhile before I buy either one. Also if you don't really expect to game on it a lot right now, why not wait a bit. Speculation is the 80gb will probably drop to the 60gb price once they run through their 60gb stock. Either way enjoy your new system, you'll have fun |

Re: Buying a PS3
If they held the same amount of data, there would be no contest. Blu Ray has a shot because it's a better format, and a theoretical limit of like 200 gigs is better than 60. That might be enough for Sony to win this one, as Beta wasn't as pronouncedly better.
I'd probably bet on this being a pointless battle anyhow, as by the time it's decided we'll all have solid state petabyte hard drives and download movies in 5 seconds. |

Re: Buying a PS3
I don't really want to hijack, but 200 gigs vs 60 gigs in disc format isn't really a big difference unless you're anticipating huge technological advances beyond 1080p. Frankly I'm not since the human eye can barely tell the difference between 1080p and 720p.

Re: Buying a PS3
I would get the 60 gig version. Marginal utility and sh*t.

Re: Buying a PS3
Not going to hijack your thread other to than to strongly suggest you really research what you're buying before you do so. In any case even if want to just buy the console then it would probably be best to wait a little while. Prices are going to plummet this holiday season. Once the 60GB's are cleared out, they're almost definitely going to have to bring the 80GB down to $500 or at least offer a better package than just Motorstorm. On the other hand, if you do want to play PS2 games on your PS3 then you should just buy it (the 60GB) right now for $500 for the emo/emulation hardware.
