Very very begginner
Hello everyone,
I'm brand new to playing poker at the casino last weekend was actually my first time ever playing poker at the casino and it was a 3/6 table of holdem. I really didnt get any "good" hands or so I thought other than 2 8's and 2 A's other than that I rarely got a good hand but then again I'm not exactly sure what a good hand is. A few times I would get 34 unsuited or 68 suited should I have played these hands or at least looked at the flop? Please help me out with what hands are good to play or at least look at the flop with. Thank you |

Re: Very very begginner
The easiest way to do this is to go buy a book. Small Stakes Hold em is very good for basics of hold em and starting hands, it is a limit hold em book however. Check out the books forum for some reccomendations

Re: Very very begginner
You should buy Ed Millers; Getting Started in Hold'em. It's an excellent book for beginners.

Re: Very very begginner
You made great move by joining this forum. I so wish I had done so when I began, my game would be in much better shape.
Spend lots of time here and ask lots of questions. You will always get quality answers. As stated above the easiest way to learn about starting hands is buy a book. If you dont have one stop reading this now and jump on your scooter and go buy one. If you use the search feature on this site you will find many, many suggestions. I also suggest watching poker on TV. Find a show that has a pro commentator. I like High Stakes Poker on GSN and though I havent seen it in a while, the PPT with Mark Seif doing the commentary. Good Luck |

Re: Very very begginner
I would suggest take it easy early on, play smaller limits and really study the game. If you have considered playing online I would start with a 50-100$ deposit and play the micro-limits to get a good feel for the game while you are studing your reading materials.

The great thing about internet poker is in 1 week.... you can get the same amount of hands as someone playing every night in a casino for a month. And read some books like others suggested. |

Welcome to the Forum.
[ QUOTE ] I amazoned Small Stakes Hold em and I should get it by friday [/ QUOTE ] Small Stakes Hold'Em is not a beginner's book. We know that because Ed Miller and his co-authors say so right at the beginning of the Introduction. Getting Started In Hold'Em by Ed Miller. Now that is a beginner's book. (An excellent one.) And in it, Ed Miller recommends, not entirely surprisingly perhaps, that you read SSHE next. |

[/ QUOTE ] This is a bad mistake in my view. None of those shows give you the entire game. A better option would be downloading some old episodes of Live at the bike (Online show that includes hand by hand analysis of live-play). While I love High-Stakes poker..... it's basically one step above a game of chicken. Those guys are just trying to prove who is the best in every hand and it is not realistic play as you would find in a 3/6 game. While they play great poker.... they are playing at a level that no new player should play (in terms of being aggressive). Oh btw... be a nit when you start out. Nits wins =) Not by much, but they win. |
