Default 5/10 - 77

Commerce 5/10 NL. Villain has about 500, I have him covered (~1100).

I open in late-middle position (hijack or MP2, can't remember) with 77 for 40. Villain calls in the BB. Not much of a read on him, since I hadn't been here too long. Seemed semi-reasonable so far, not involved in a lot of pots or anything.

Flop comes QQ6. He checks, I bet 60, he calls.
Turn 5. Check-check.
River 9. He checks again... any value in a bet here? If so, how much? Also, is the turn check ok for pot-size control?

turn check is standard, and i'd fold the river if he bets, barring a read that he has a tendency to make weird oop floats. against most people you're beat if they bet. once he checks, i think you can make a small value bet. 88 is the only better hand i can think of that wouldn't usually bet the river, so i'd make it like $80 into the $200 pot

Bets do two things... get better hands to fold, and worse hands to call.

What worse hands call this river value bet? Which better hands call it?

I don't see an obvious worse hand calling this... smaller pp's? More likely he's got something like KJ, KT, A-rag, etc. Would those call?

I can only see 3 hands calling the river that you beat: 44, 33, 22

I check here, too thin even for me

Yeah, my first inclination was to check, too. It'd be a really thin bet even for limit.

It's an easy value bet in limit.

Actually, I thought the board was QQ8, not QQ6. It's an easier bet in limit with the 6 there.

I would check the river, partly because of my memory of how I felt when I got called on the flop (I felt like I probably didn't have the best hand).

This is a pretty deep slowplay for Villain, if that's what he's doing, but I'm certainly not ruling it out.

Of course, when it checks through and it turns out I'm winning versus 76s or pocket 2's, I'll start thinking, "He wasn't going to checkraise with that; I should've bet." But oh well. I had trouble figuring out sometimes whether or not to value bet the river in limit; it's not so shocking that I have the same problem in No Limit. But at least in NL my desire to check it down when I'm uncertain is correct more often than it was in limit.
