Will poker ever become a coin flip?
I am not 100% sure if this is the right forum to post this in, but if it isn't tell me so and I will move it to the right one.
I was wondering on a philosopical level if there will ever be a time when all poker players whether it be online, live, or both will ever become as good as one another. Taking out the BR side of things do you ever think that at some point every poker player will know as much as the next and use their knowledge correctly most of the time, and play at the same level as the next player. I do want to stress that I realize everyone is human and makes mistakes, but what I am getting at is does anyone have any thoughts about this. Do you all think that there will always be "fish", (which I might add I still consider myself), that will fund the pockets of the bigger sharks? I know that the players don't always make the right move and poker is a game of incomplete information and that is what makes it fun. What it boils down to will everyone read the same books, practice, and read these forums and just be hoping for the best cards. All of this was just a thought and hopefully it made since, if it didn't just tell me and I will try to explain. |

Re: Will poker ever become a coin flip?
I don't think it'll ever quite get that far but online is 100 fold harder than it was 3 years ago and 1000 fold harder than 5+ years ago.
Who remembers when middle pair would regularly stack off calling PSB on all streets. Who also remembers when over half of all players would show their cards most of the time. In fact, I can remember playing online there would be times where people would complain if someone had 'auto-muck' on and never showed - lol! |

Re: Will poker ever become a coin flip?
What will sooner happen is that games will dry up and stop running.
If you want a real world example of that hypothetical, look at the state of big games. When a bad player sits in, there are tons of people ready to sit with the 'tard, yet those games seldom start otherwise. All of these people would be willing to play in 100/200 games regularly if there was a healthy supply of bad players. The reason midstakes and small stakes games run so often is because those games are within the budget of most recreational players. |

Re: Will poker ever become a coin flip?
b&m games are FAAAAR from drying up. i dont care how many books come out or how long people play , casinos will always have horrible players, who due to the luck factor, will always donk it up live. online is another story but i think the same holds true to a certain level, at certain stakes

That the game would dry up due to lack of bad players. (If I am still playing that will never happen though) |

Re: Will poker ever become a coin flip?
The mathematics professor addressed his class, "I've been teaching calculus for 20 years. How can you still not understand it?"
It is possible that the population of poker players has gotten slightly more sophisticated, but until we replace humans with cyborgs, there will be new players, those who don't read books, and those who simply have a hard time applying what they have been taught. It's a naive thought that we are all on the same path toward poker enlightenment. Most losing players did not win at the lower levels. Most players don't take poker seriously. Most blackjack players don't bother to learn basic strategy, and playing poker decently is far more complicated than basic strategy. |

Re: Will poker ever become a coin flip?
Ummm, you obviously haven't played live lately.
The parade of the clueless at casinos will continue indefinitely. But the game moves very slow (comparatively speaking) and the rake is high so you need a substantial advantage to win substantial money. Online, I can see a possibility where the edge could be so small that it would really make it difficult for anyone but the best of the best. But I doubt it. Its just so easy and fun to play poker badly, online or live. |
