I have been playing pretty straightforward - not been out of line while villian has been at table. First squeeze with him at table.

This is one of those hands that is completely opponent-dependent. He shouldn't really have any two-pairs given PF, I can't see him checking a set twice, and any overpair with a club wouldn't automatically just shove, so he's representing a flush or nothing, or something like Ac,x...when I play I usually talk myself into a call in those spots, lose to his nuts, then watch him fold for the next 2 hours straight and realize I stacked off to a total nit.

You seem to have played yourself into a bad spot by taking your decisions one at a time in this hand instead of having a start to finish plan of what you're trying to accomplish.
I think this turn spot is actually a decision that needs to be made preflop. I'm not gonna reraise AQs in position without having made up my mind whether or not I'm stacking off if the original raiser calls and I make top pair. If you don't want to beat him into the pot here you should probably have just called preflop.
Similarly, you also shouldn't have bet the turn without a good idea what you're doing if he pushes. What were you hoping for, him to check call turn and river with AJ?

What do you hope to accomplish by betting the turn with the intention of folding? I would never bet top pair intending to fold on the turn in this situation.

Either bet/call or check behind. It would depend on the opponent. Against an unknown I would probably bet/call. But against an unknown I really don't like reraising preflop.
