Its crunch time. Telling the family I failed
Ive been playing online poker for a while now and decided in january I wanted to play it for a living. I now earn a nice bit from poker and I'm moving into a new house with the money. This is definatly the path I want to take in life.
The only problem is this. My whole family are expecting me to graduate this summer and then to get a good job in the city or a hospital or something noble! however, there is a huge issue with this; I kinda dropped out of uni (mostly by not going to lectures/seminars because I was playing poker). So today I have to tell them that I have failed university again (I've been there for about 4 years now!) and they are totally expecting me to graduate. I'm sitting upstairs now with the fear!!! How the [censored] do I tell them?? I'm the first person to goto uni in the family there gonna be so dissapointed!!! More importantly though is that they will worry about me to the point it makes them ill. I really dont want to inflict that on them. Suggestions? |

Re: Its crunch time. Telling the family I failed
Just be honest with them. They're undoubtedly going to be shocked/disappointed but you can't let other people's expectations rule your life.

Re: Its crunch time. Telling the family I failed
You caused the problem by not being honest with them up until this point. Now you're in a situation where all you can do is tell the truth and weather the storm or make up a stupid lie that will probably come back and bite you in the ass.

Re: Its crunch time. Telling the family I failed
I did it, I told them!!!
Well kind of, I havn't fully explained the fact that I want to become a professional poker player. After I told them I failed they couldn't even bare to look at me, now they want me to get a job. Ahh well this is what I want to do and they will have to accept that. I suppose I need to tell them my plans? |

Re: Its crunch time. Telling the family I failed
You dropped out with 6 months left?
I don't know. If you can't stand 6 months of grinding out school to its end how sure are you to grind out a living when times get tough on the felt?(reminds me of a scene in Officer and a Gentlemen where a guy DOR's in the final week of training. His g/f is asking him rhetorically, Who DOR's in the last week!?!) I'd say if you're really having a problem with it you may not be ready to play poker for a living. b |

Re: Its crunch time. Telling the family I failed
Show them your monthly stats that will give them a little comfort i guess.
I hope you make at least double as you would of working a regular job, for quitting school and giving up a solid income??? If your serieus, dedicated and have it straight in your head you can make a lot of money doing what you love, be your own boss and have your freedom. I wish you the best of luck |

[/ QUOTE ] Sounds like how I quit my last job, I kinda stopped going Ultimately you have to reap the rewards of your decision, so outside input is worth only so much. I say let them down easy, maybe take a break. I've been on a break from college for 10 years now. Maybe one day I'll make it back. A job is about applying your skills for profit. You've found that without a college degree. More power to you. |
