Internet Connection Breaks Every Few Hours..
I have cable internet and for some reason in the past few weeks, the connection will break for about 2-5 minutes every few hours randomly. Now when the connection breaks, the lights on my modem and router are still flashing - which leads me to conclude that something is wrong with my computer. I don't think any specific programs are causing this as I have had literally nothing running before and the connection will still break.
Normally, everything works perfectly, it's just that every couple of hours the connection will break for a short amount of time, then correct itself and start working again without me doing anything. I ran a couple of spyware removal programs and came up with nothing. Then I ran AVG anti-virus scanner and it said the following files had been "changed" C:WINDOWS\System32\kernel32.dll C:WINDOWS\System32\user32.dll C:WINDOWS\System32\shell32.dll C:WINDOWS\System32\ntoskrnl.exe C:WINDOWS\System32\drivers\etc\hosts Does this have anything to do with my connection breaks? I don't know what to do and the connection breaks are really killing me |

Re: Internet Connection Breaks Every Few Hours..
Having those files changed is not a good sign. They are very important files.
You can open the hosts file in notepad. If there's any line without a # before it paste it here (except the 127.0.0.1 localhost line). |

Re: Internet Connection Breaks Every Few Hours..
some rootkits will patch ntoskrnl to run its code in ring0. itll have unrestricted access in that case
and if that *really* is the case i think you're very lucky this caught your eye. |

Sorry if I seem slow, I'm not very good with computer stuff. I also just realized that kernel32.dll is the only one out of the list that is running in my task manager... is this a problem? (though I think dllhhost.exe might the last one AVG listed) |

Sorry if I seem slow, I'm not very good with computer stuff. [/ QUOTE ] The # before the line means it's a comment. This means that the line is not getting "executed". It's simply there to inform whoever is reading the file of what something might do. So, with that said copy/paste all of the lines that do not start with a pound sign (#). The host file can be pretty dangerous/troublesome if it's modified by someone with malicious intentions. |
