Young poker player

hey everyone. my name is jake and im new to this site. i have had the idea of wanting to write a book about what its like to be a young kid playing poker and trying to work my way up to play higher limits and getting the respect of the people that i play with at local casinos while working on each part of my poker game. would anyone find that interesting?

Probably not to be honest, although you never know. Maybe keep a good journal, become awesome, then reevaluate plan. Also I wouldn't put respect too high on your list.

Reality check:
Poker biographies are pretty poor sellers with a few rare exceptions. Unless you are or become very well known and very successfully, it has little or no shot.

And they're usually horrible. I got Moneymaker's book last Christmas which was ok, but I wouldn't have bought it.

2nd idea: write a fiction. Plenty of BS artists floating around here to help.

I think the more important question is, would <u>you</u> find it interesting?

If yes, then write it.
If no, then don't.

Remember, a huge proportion of very successful books were turned down by endless publishers, agents, and others who claimed to know about the book trade. I say that without intending any offence to other posters in this thread.

You know what man, if it makes you happy and it's something to think about besides poker all the time, do it!
It would help if you knew someone in the publishing industry to shop the idea around to. I think it's an idea that I haven't seen too many books on. I'd read it. If you sold the book, it would pad your bankroll too. Go for it.

Hey thanks for all the feedback guys. Its greatly appriciated.

I deffinetly worded what I want in a strange way. I don't want it to be a biography. Because who really wants to read about a random kid playing cards? But I do want to write the book from my point of view and a younger kids point of view rather than an old or middle age professional.

As for publications for who was saying if I could find one... My uncle wrote a book called "fear not" a little short book with short phrases dealing with the long struggle and big pictures of life. Ok book I didn't get to really read it yet. But saying that I could use the same publications he did.

Anymore feedback for my ideas would be great guys! I'm open for suggestions. Put ups or put downs!

Just before you talk yourself out of writing this thing, might I suggest you pop along to your local book store. Take a look at the books currently on offer. You'll see that people have an insatiable appetite for all manner of nonsense. Up against some of the things currently racking up the sales, a book about "a random kid playing cards" sounds pretty good to me. But only if <u>you</u> are interested in it.

Let's face it, for many people - myself included - poker is an obsession and obsessions are always interesting - either because you share that particular obsession or you think, "Gee, I wonder what it's like being obsessed with (...) "

If it's something you're interested in writing, then I say go for it. You can worry later about persuading others of its worth.

Here in the UK, some years ago a guy called Nick Hornby wrote a book about what it was like to be a supporter of a particular soccer team. (Book called Fever Pitch, subsequently made into a film.) Excellent book, and a huge success. But it was a book that many people would have told him not to bother writing. Who'd be interested in some random guy supporting some soccer team, right?
