Default Gary \"Bones\" Berlard

Didn't know where to put this, so I put it here..

Does anyone know anything about Berland?

In this article:

http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/poker...amp;id=2906974

He is described as "more or less despicable".

What did he do to deserve this description?

Bones was an excellent no-limit hold'em player, but he was also one of the biggest degenerates on the planet.

I've never seen anybody go on self-destruct like this guy. There's lots more but...

Here's one story. He and his good budy are stone cold broke. They scrounge up enough money for a tournament entry at the Silver City. Bones wins it for $2700. On the way out the door he runs into someone he knows and asks to borrow $300--and gets it! Why did he need $300? So he could bet an even $3000 on the football game instead of $2700.

Of course they lost.

Only few things I think I know about Berland is he knew the numbers better than anyone back in the 70's and he was a massive druggie and died from it.

Confirm/Deny?

Drugs, yes, but I don't believe he died from that. He had a debilitating disease (possibly a rare blood disorder), the name of which escapes me. He had health problems most of his life. If I remember correctly this was the cause of his early demise.

By the way, I learned a lot about playing no-limit from Bones.

The last time I saw Bones was in 84,85. He was limping, had gained a lot of weight, and looked horrible. I think he died in 86.

Last paragraph:
Sailor Roberts, Jack Strauss, Jr. Whited, Ted Binion, Jimmy Doman, Bones Berland, Waterhole, Jim White, Many others and now Stu. I HATE DRUGS!!!
We leave Stu in Gods hands. RIP my good buddy.
