Default Seven Twenty Seven (727) Strategy

I need help in preparing for an upcoming poker game, where we we are certain to play some 727. In my hunt for some guidance on strategy, I can't find anything...lots of guides with the rules, but nothing that helps decide what to do when you are dealt a 12!! Any thoughts on where to find some strategy info for 727??

Here is something to look for. We play where you get three chances to refuse a card. You put a marker on your hole card and when you get three, you cannot take another card. If you are in late position, you can sometimes refuse twice. See how many other people are refusing. It just might end up that everyone takes another card and you stay with your hole card obviously representing a 7 or possibly a six. If everybody else is going for high, then you have half the pot locked up. If somebody else has stayed with two cards, you are in trouble likely.

The reason I say this is that most people want a 6 or 7 as their hole card. Some might stay with a 5 if everybody is going for 27. And especially if you see a 6 or 7 as an upcard, you can be more sure that it is not somebody's down card. So regardless of your hole card, this is a form or bluffing. Another good aspect is if you do end up holding with crap, you can get out of the hand fairly early saving some bets.

Conversely, say you are in early position and you have two markers and one other guy has two markers and all others are going high. If you refuse that third card, you put a lot of pressure on the last guy if he has a hand like 3 or 4. He isn't feeling so good and will likely draw now. And that draw may force him to head for 27 again giving you half the pot.

When going for high hand, it is vitally important to know if over 27 is a bust for obvious reasons. In situations where you are getting close to 27, it is sometime good to have a face card down. Say you have 24 showing. Another guy has 22 showing. If you take a marker, you are basically saying you are almost done drawing and have something good. If the guy with 22 has something like a 3, he has you beat but he may draw and bust, especially if you put a second marker signalling you are happy with your hand right now. And again, position is important since you can see when a guy has put his third marker up signalling he is done.

Here are some rules to clarify:

1. Is an A worth 1 or 11 or can it be either? (can it be both so you can low and high e.g. 6A or 5AA)

2. Does getting over 27 bust you?

3. Does 6.5 beat 7.5 or is it a tie? (Same with 26.5 and 27.5.)

4. If you have 7.5 do you have to go for high now?

5. Does a natural 7 beat a two card 7 like 43 or 52?

6. For high pot ties, do the lowest number of cards win? The highest number?

to me it doesn't seem profitable to chase a guy down to 27 just to shoot at half the pot
