Default Standard Rule?

I haven't played much live before but I was playing in a cash game at a place by home that spreads 1-2, 2-5 nl Thurs. - Sat. I was wondering if it was a standard rule to not be able to ask the dealer for a count of the pot or not?

You can ask, they can't count it.

Only in Pot Limit games is the dealer allowed to count the pot. The dealer is not allowed to assist the players in a hand and counting the pot is just that.

Well then how does the dealer know how much to rake in a NL game?

For the OP, you cannot ask the dealer to count the pot and most dealers dont usually stack it, the best you can do is to ask the dealer to spread the pot, so that you can get a better view to count it as best you can by yourself...

As for the rake, most dealers should be able to keep a running total of the stack size in their head, at least I know I can do it and thats how I do it when I deal, but I have seen dealers have to count the pot before.

Not in any reasonable room. I certainly won't spread a pot for you. The TD at the Venetian is directing dealers to spread the pot if requested but that directive only applies to tournaments.

I was joking, of course the dealers can count the pot. Photoc said the dealers aren't allowed to count the pot, when actually he should have said they can't tell you how much is in the pot.
