Default short pitches/chips

I never understood one thing fully when watching "better" players chip or hit short pitches with a lob wedge, even from a tight lie in the fairway. The ball tends to slide a bit above the club after impact, and at some points it almost looks like the clubhead is farther away than the player than the ball. Could someone clear this up for me?

If you hit the ball with the leading edge up(Open faced SW or LW) and the leading edge is traveling downwards (you haven't flipped the club head into the air) the leading edge will strike the ball and the ball will roll up the face and off. If you keep the head low as it passes the hands and you keep the club face under control you will get the result you describe.

I'm sitting here giggling uncontrollably because I can't make a lick of sense from either of these posts.

This also reminded me of my friend trying to pitch the ball last year, the ball seemed to stick to the clubface and he actually flipped the ball over his shoulder on the follow through. He threw the club down in disgust yelling out "thats the third time that happened this year!". I don't think I ever laughed so hard on the golf course.

Just means they are accelerating properly thru impact.

I assume you are talking about lob shots? You are normally making a fullish swing with a relatively fast clubhead speed to make these shots go high and land soft. The ball goes straight up into the air and the clubhead goes speeding right past it.

ummm...I have no idea what you're talking about then. Do you understand that the clubhead has loft that propels the ball upwards?

what i mean is they're not taking a fullish swing as you would with a flop/lob

maybe they're hitting a half lob(?), but as far as i could see the clubface was square and not open

here is a bad mspaint

For you sir, I will endeavor to explain my post further with some video. I did say with an open faced SW/LW but the same thing can occur with a square face provided your weight stays on the right side of the ball at impact and the club travels down the line at impact without any closing of the face.
