Playing Bad to Get More Action

Is it worth it to give action when you know you have the worst of it to get action later? Or even play like a donkey on a few hands.

I play with the same group of people every weekend with one or two new faces in the game. As my game has improved I am getting almost no action. I raise and everyone folds. Even the new guys catch on quickly and fold with everyone else.

I work, so on the weekends I play as much as I can, so I am often playing tired. I sometimes chase or refuse to fold because my brain goes numb and I convince myself he doesn't have it when I know he does. I was trying to stop this, but after a conversation with a regular that talks to anyone that listens, I am thinking it might be good advertisement. If he strongly tells everyone how bad I played a few hands that may get me more action.

Is this worth a few bucks if I am ahead at the end, or am I just making excuses for being a donkey?

If they fold everytime you raise then raise every hand... Ok i'm being a smartass. But seriously. Yes you should change some things but not by playing bad.

i would start raising more with hands you would normally limp with. If people constantly fold when you raise then you will keep picking up blinds. Eventually people will start to not believe you. When this happens you can tightne up a little and you should get the appropriate amount of action desired.

At the Borgata 20/40 game, 8 of the other 9 players are usually oblivious to how many hands you've played in the last hour. Even if you haven't played a hand in several orbits, you will get action when you raise with your monsters.

In my experience, there is little to no value in advertising being a retard in the Borgata 20/40 games. The level of play doesn't often get much more advanced than the players thinking as deep as "what do I have?" and sometimes a smarty-pants will come by and examine the idea of "what might my opponent have?"

If you're playing good, turbomucking when you make tough folds after being raised on the turn and river, and not showing your hands when you pumped at every opportunity with a strong draw and whiffed, you will get action anyways because your weak opponents will not be able to read your betting patterns. You only don't get action if you play every hand like a Vegas grinder nit.

I will start to raise with some of my limpers and may show a bluff or two in the future.

Thanks for your responses but you can't compare the Borgata to the Peppermill in Reno. It is a MUCH smaller pool of people and I have been playing with the same ones for over a year now. So even if they are a little slow catching on, I think they are there now.

Once the casino finishes the new hotel tower and convention center later this year I hope not to have this problem. Until then I will raise a little light.

I have some experience in this area.

One thing you should be aware of, is if you purposely play a bad hand very strongly or oddly (even just one hand a session) the impression it makes lasts a LONG time.

This will complicate your own game, however, because the counter-reactions of other bad players are diverse and difficult to predict. Some may choose to simply check/call with all hands to 'catch you bluffing'. Others may raise with junk, assuming you have junk. Still others may tighten up even more because the uncertainty worries them.

Just be aware that playing with your own image tends to also make the game more difficult to play postflop.

After watching some of Schneids videos, I'm for sure going to rethink the way I create my image. I'll post back on how it goes after a trip to Vegas this week...

I wouldn't start raising with absolute garbage, but I think early position PF raising and showing down a hand like 65s or 44 occasionally will definitely get you action. Also, it's only a small mistake to do, so you're not giving up a whole lot of your equity edge.

Btw, I've played at that game at the Peppermill and if it plays like it did a year ago, it's horrible. Find another game.
