Default Air conditioner question

I just moved into a new apartment that doesn't have air conditioning. All the rooms have sleeves in the wall that are designed for a specific brand and size of air conditioner. The problem is that all of the models designed to fit in those sleeves are very expensive and have many more BTUs that would be necessary to cool the small rooms in my apartment. So my possibly dumb question is: can I just shove a smaller air conditioner into the sleeve?

They come with sleeves. Take a few minutes and install the correct sleeves.

I had this. I tried a smaller one, but ended up taking it back and spending the $500 for the correct size sleeve model. It sucks, but it's the one you need.

I'm curious, what is wrong with using a smaller one and insulating the gaps?

Build a "sleeve" for the smaller unit out of something lightweight(1/4 melamine and duct tape),
line the sleeve of the larger unit with heavy plastic and duct tape.( to protect it )
Place the sleeve for the smaller unit in the sleeve of the larger unit, brace and use expanding foam to fill in the gaps, let set,
slide smaller unit into sleeve.
