Default Preflop Hand Range Precentages

I what to calculate say, the top 40% of all my hands preflop - how do I do this?
Equally, if I have a preflop range of AA-22, Any Ace, kqs-23s (for example), how do I calculate the percentage of hands I'm playing? Thanks for any help, this may be a complete n00b q but it's not something I'm familiar with.

There are 169 unique starting hands in a two hole card game. Let's forget for now that they are not all equally likely.

You have described a range of AA-22, Any Ace, kqs-23s.

AA-22 = 13
Any A = 12X2 (for suited and unsuited) = 24
KQs-32s = 11
Total = 48

I get 28.4% with this.

So where are you going with this?

Its not too hard to count them according to their actual weights (6 for the pairs, 4 for the suiteds, 12 for the unsuiteds.)

AA-22 = 13x6 = 78
Aces = 12x16 = 192
KQs-32s = 11x4 = 44

Total, 314/1326 = 23.7%.

Add hands until you get up to 530. Any two suited, for instance, would get you there almost exactly - but if you want 'best hands' you'd probably want to add, let's say, the suited one- and two-gappers (76 more, thats 390), all the Broadways (KQ KJ KT QJ QT JT offsuit, and KTs, another 76, thats 466) and, then, say, J9/T9/T8/98 and K9/K8 for - that would make 538/1326. If you're in a steal position you'll be better off putting in all the unsuited kings rather than the medium and small connectors.

Cliff notes: 40% of hands includes a LOT of crap hands.

FOR a complete newb.

Download Pokerstove.

Click on a player, choose the preflop tab, and use the slider bar. slide it to 40%. Viola, a top 40% hand range appears.
