Default Judge Mathis?

Are these TV judges REALLY judges? Specfically Judge Mathis? It's awesome listening to him blow holes in people's arguments.

so he threatened to kill you?'
-yeah
"did you take it seriously?
-yeah
"what'd the police do?"
-we didn't call the police.
"so you thought someone was going to come and kill you and you didnt call the police?"
-we..uh...well..

BAZING - THEY JUST GOT JUDGED.

So anyone know? I'd like to believe they're real...I checked Wiki which says they are real, but Wiki is pretty retarded.

Yes, they're real. The parties sign a contract stating that they will abide by the judge's decision. Basically, its a televised arbitration hearing.

Yes, I think Judge Mathis was on President Bush's short list of Supreme Court nominations. Clearly the most qualified of the bunch, too bad he didn't make the cut.

Everyone on the show usually gets a set amount (say $5000). They can sue up to that amount. Whoever loses gets that amount deducted from their payment. So someone who goes on the show and loses a judgement for $5000 walks away with nothing, and the other guy walks with $10k. Pretty sweet deal, especially since you are now not liable in court for your damages.

A lot of the judges on these shows are (or were) real judges. Judge Judy, Mathis, Wapner, and Milan were all real judges at some point. Mills Lane was not.

lmao, I was always wondered about Mills Lane. He was pretty bad ass though, he used to be my favorite when I was a kid.

Are you sure about the people getting paid 5k? Maybe you are confusing it with the stipulation that small claims courts only go up to $5k?

Anyways, thanks for clearing it all up for me everyone.

Mills Lane was not.

But he *was* a lawyer and a prosecutor, so it's not like he got the show just from his refereeing experience and fame.

I'm not 100% sure about every show, but on Judge Judy-
The award for each judgment is paid by the producers of the show from a fund reserved for each case. The remainder of the fund is split between the parties for a particular case.

It will depend greatly on each show.

It's the same with The People's Court. At the end of each show a graphic pops up explaining this very quickly.
