Do the demos give you enough gameplay to make it worth while to download what is usually 1 gig or more?

Definitely. Many demos are actually the entire games but just restricted by time or progress.

For pretty much all games, it's worthwhile to see if the game is worth buying. Some games actually show a very significant part of the game. Both Rainbow Six Vegas and Splinter Cell Double Agent had a complete level from the actual game.

Sports games are usually restricted to only a few teams without the ability to change quarter length, camera angle, etc.
