What is the meaning of “stud”?
Hi, everybody,
I am a new player. I like to play 5 card stud and 7 card stud. Since English is not my mother language. I don’t understand the meaning of “stud”. Could anyone tell the meaning of “stud” in 7 card stud? Thank you very much! |

Re: What is the meaning of “stud”?
My understanding is that it means you're dealt cards in multiple rounds and are 'stuck' with the cards you get, as opposed to draw.

Re: What is the meaning of “stud”?
I don't really know why stud poker is called stud poker. The old laws in California banned "stud-horse poker," and so until 1987 or so, only draw variations were legal. A stud horse is a male that is used for breeding. The term can be applied to any domestic animal. It is commonly used as a slang term for a virile man. That usage is pretty recent, I think, and stud poker has been around for something like 150 years.

Re: What is the meaning of “stud”?
"Stud" is also a beam of wood behind a wall covering (like drywall) which can have a nail driven into it to hang a heavy piece of artwork or picture, etc. I can see how this might have a relevance to poker because in stud games you start with less than five cards (a foundation, if you will) and build up to five or seven cards from there. Just a guess, I'm not sure why it is called "stud-poker" either.

Still not sure what stud horses have to do with it tho. Maybe it's not a game for geldings |

Re: What is the meaning of “stud”?
My understanding is that 5 card stud was first, and for some reason it reminded the players of their "stud horses" during the Civil War. Then when 7 stud became more popular the name stuck.
