NFL Hypothetical

How valuable would the following player be: A running back who got exactly one yard on every single carry, no more and no less. He could be used as many times as you wished during each game, but he has the same injury potential as any other normal player.

Certainly not the best player of all time or anywhere close to that.

A more interesting question would be what point would he become the MVP of the league. Obviously at anything greater than 2.5 he would be unstoppable.

The ability to always get a first down on 4th and 1, and 3rd and 2 would be extremely valuable. If he wasn't susceptible to injury he'd be among the most valuable players ever, but since he is going to be plunging into the line on short yardage repeatedly he is gonna get hurt sooner or later because any coach would be using him all the time.

That's an awesome question.

The value increase between 2.4ypc and 2.5ypc is enormous. If you take out injuries, the increase would be infinity, but the guy is going to get hurt sooner or later running the ball every play.

A 2.4ypc guy is still incredibly valuable. All you need is 3.1 yards on 1st down or 5.2 yards on 1st/2nd down and you have an automatic first down. That player is the MVP.

I would say somewhere about 2ypc the player becomes MVP.

Do we have any numbers on how often teams face 3rd/4th and 1s. If it's rare overall, then he's not particularly valuable (and off the top of my head, it's not too often that a team is facing 4th and 1 on it's final drive). If however, there are alot of occurences, then yeah, he's your lifetime MVP.

Also, anyone remember the first time AF posted theis Q, along with 40 others, and it got deleted? Here's hoping this one meets a better end.

Don't forget 2nd and 3 and 3rd and 2. Those become automatic first downs as well.

Also, if a team got 9 yards on 1st down then it could take 2 shots deep for free.
