Default Poker sites keep lagging out when I have a torrent client open?

Basically everytime I open up a torrent program, and play poker... it lags like crazy.

I get timed out of tables and so on.

Even after I close the torrent program it still lags until I reconnect my whole internet to get a new IP address..

its a really strange problem as it only started happening a month ago.

does anyone know what it could be? ports? etc?

I have the same problem, although my client is on a separate computer (sharing a switch). My theory is that the large number of connections that the client handles act as a DNS style attack.

Dunno what kind of connection you have, but mine is a typical cable type setup 3000/256.

What happens is the torrents peg the upload rate, and all other connections suffer because even when downloading something, there is an uploading component to it.

You could try throttling your upload rate down a bit. What I did was to install an alternate router OS on my WRT54GS called tomato. It allows me to set QOS/Rules so all torrent traffic has a low priority. My regular traffic gets higher priority...

Yep, it seems to be caused by the sheer number of connections for me too (limiting download/upload or using "quality of service" on the router didn't help). It seems that even the constant bombardment after you've turned it off can cause problems too, meaning you have to wait for upto an hour for them to stop or restart your cable modem to get a new IP assigned.

EDIT: Has anybody tried using a Socks5 proxy server? It might be a bit slower, but surely this would stop the constant bombardment that's causing the problems?

thanks for the replys, Im glad its not just me then as I was starting to blame my ISP.

Ive tried capping the up/down speed on the p2p programs but it doesnt help at all.. i think that the number of connections connecting to you is probably the problem then, if anyone knows a work a round id appreciate it alot

could try limiting #global connections in p2p app to 400 or less.

Possibly traffic shaping based on having a large number of connections open simultaneously, but there has also been a huge increase in things like VoIP and YouTube over the last year or so, and at least here in the UK the ISPs aren't really upgrading to keep up with demand (hence completely [censored] service all round...).

Also you could disable the DHT network and see if that helps.
