Stars lets you unregister from various satellites and keep them as W$.
The past 2 yrs they have allowed you to buy into certain prelim events with these W$.
I don't know if they are going to do this again. But when they did this it was very close to being like sats direct into the prelims.

Of course, you can play in whatever $20 or $30 buy-in cash-tourney you like and if you win just buy into the prelim yourself.

Any idea how Stars is getting around the WSOP rule about no third-party buyins?

I believe, but am not positive, Lee Jones himself said in a post on here that you can use W$ to buy into any event with a buyin at or below $5000 if you are at least a silverstar VIP.

As for using tourney/cash wins for buying in, some of us have wives that would suggest other "better" uses for those funds. If I win a satellite into the WSOP ME, I have to play or it goes to waste. If I win a tourney for $12k (same as winning a seat on Stars), that can be used elsewhere.
