Default Should the US ban TV campaign ads?

They are banned in Britian.

I believe the ads are used to make voters less informed; rather than letting candidates' stances on issues decide races, people are forced to choose between two corporate images (think Bud vs. Miller).

The wolves/ostrich ads from the 2004 election come to mind. Nevermind that poll that said the majority of Bush voters believed he supported the Kyoto treaty.

I agree, the fewer ways information can reach the masses, the more educated voters will be.

I agree. The more restrictions government places on elections the less power government will have.

many people wouldn't realize an election was going on if it weren't for ads

No, the root problem is the funding of campaigns. Direct the attention that way if you want reform.

Campaign ads arnt illegal in the UK, for an election at least. What we have in the UK is the situation where campaign time cannot be bought and TV companies are obliged as part of there license to provide party political broadcasts to all parties free of charge.

I think this is the much better way of doing it than having to buy add time, US politics is to reliant on funding to win elections for any party to stand a chance without 'selling' favours.

Allow ads, but also allow private causes of action for deceptive ads

Every Democrat and Republican I've seen talk on this issue say Full Disclosure is the way to go, so why hasn't it been implemented yet?

Politicians say a lot of good things every now and again...but really they're just waiting for [censored] to blow over so they can go back to their slummy ways.
