I float with a gutshot, then contemplate firing off a couple rounds
villain was pretty new to table. hadnt done anything stupid yet and had been fairly tight preflop.
hero had been only showing down winners and big 2nd best hands. i had recently lost a ~200bb pot with set over set, where i bet flop, turned a set, and bet when it checked to me, then pushed all in over villains ch/r. Poker Stars No Limit Holdem Ring game Blinds: $0.50/$1 6 players Converter Stack sizes: UTG: $303.60 UTG+1: $120.55 CO: $101.50 Hero: $105.75 SB: $59 BB: $17.80 Pre-flop: (6 players) Hero is Button with 4[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] 5[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] 2 folds, CO raises to $3, Hero calls, 2 folds. River: 8[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] ($85.5, 2 players) CO checks, HERO??? preflop was probably pretty marginal. i fold 45s here about 1/2 the time and 3 bet maybe ~10%. i decided to call this time. by the river i believed villain was on a very specific range... what do you think he has, and what do you think he calls a push with? thouhts? ill post the rest of my my ideas about the hand after some discussion |

Re: I float with a gutshot, then contemplate firing off a couple rounds
i have problems giving up in these spots after i raise the turn. since i feel im representing the flush, and because of that i have to fire that barrel on the river otherwise he gets to a showdown for the price he got on the turn. you dont want him to think you are giving up bluffs when you get called on the turn. also i would fire (not sure if it is good or not) because just incase he has a big diamond and was trying to flush up himself, he may feel he cant call on the river with his one pair or whatever now that he has missed his big flush.
ive been trying to stop doing these big bluffs at 100NL ...and when i stop doing them ...seems to be working well..i still get paid off when i have the flush anyway. i am going to be moving up to 200NL in the next few days and i wonder if these kinds of plays are neccessary there to get paid on your big hands? |

Re: I float with a gutshot, then contemplate firing off a couple round
I put villain most likely on a pair of jacks with a high diamond or a high pp with a diamond. In either case, pushing the river is viable; though, it is generally not a good idea to make big bluffs with no post flop reads.

I shove the river here
I like the whole hand |

Usually give up on the river, from villains perspective the 8 is unlikely to help you so you might get played back at a fair amount.

looks like an AJ thats afraid of the set. Doesn't mean he won't call.

Re: I float with a gutshot, then contemplate firing off a couple round
I think the fact that villain's turn bet could easily have been a continuation bet on a scary card, followed by a call to a high flush means that you have to follow through here. That combined with the possibility of him throwing a decent ace away makes the $60 investment to win $80 well worth while, IMO.
