Default Help:\"I think I\'ll watch a video file right about....REBOOT WTF?! \"

If I'm watching a vid file on Media Player Classic or Win Media Player and open a new vid, on occasion the PC reboots. Any ideas?

Windows XP w/ all updates.

Thanks

No error messages? Likely culprits include a short between your motherboard/case (more likely if it is a cheapo case, unlikely if your computer is from a retail manufacturer, i.e. HP), or power-supply issues (likely if you built it yourself or had someone build it and it is a cheap generic power supply unit). Have a good look at how the motherboard is screwed into the case and eliminate the short circuit scenario. Find out the wattage and make of your Power Supply Unit and post system specs.

It's an HP, so no to the first 2 Q's.

How do I find out the wattage/make?

okay, if it only reboots under higher load (watching a video / 100% cpu), then it's either overheating or the power supply can't handle the load.

download prime 95 and do a torture test, this will max out the cpu. play a 3d game (unreal 2004 or something) and see if it reboots.

it could be a memory issue I suppose, so download memtest86+ and install it onto a floppy, reboot and let it test the memory. any errors and you've found the problem.

how many case fans do you have? there is a program to monitor temperatures also - mbm5. download and install that.

This should help you narrow down the problem. gl.
