Christians: Is the only reason...
that you don't kill people that you fear your god's wrath or want his reward? Is your god the reason you behave at all?

that you don't kill people that you fear your god's wrath or want his reward? Is your god the reason you behave at all? [/ QUOTE ] It would appear that way, since many can't seem to fathom what possible reasons an atheist would have to refrain from rape, pillage, and plunder at will. But this has been re-hashed pretty thoroughly on this forum before if you care to do a search. You might also want to check out RayBornert's comments in our exchange in another thread. He should give you some insight into how some feel atheists are "supposed" to think. |

Re: Christians: Is the only reason...
I had a guy once tell me that the only reason he didn't kill all of his friends is that god wanted him to be good. I'll go out on a limb and guess that he's an anomaly.

that you don't kill people that you fear your god's wrath or want his reward? Is your god the reason you behave at all? [/ QUOTE ] Actually, surprisingly enough, the reason I dont kill people is because I'm not a psychopath. And while god can be the basis for morality, I do good things because it feels good. |

I do good things because it feels good. [/ QUOTE ] That reads a lot like: "I think feeling good is more important than doing good." |

that you don't kill people that you fear your god's wrath or want his reward? Is your god the reason you behave at all? [/ QUOTE ] i choose not to do it because it would create intolerable waste in my life. i'm sure anybody can invent some situational ethic type scenarios where i'd be willing to take a life (most probably in defense of hearth and home). life is best lived in such a way that you'd never want or to kill anybody. life is badly lived if there are a lot of people you want or to kill or there are a lot of people that want to kill you. i think it's quite easy for any self-interested atheist to reason exactly as i just did. i don't think it's reasonable for an atheist to accuse a christian of not caring about waste in their life right now or not caring about the quality of their life right now. ray |
