Playing the short stack with 6+ left
I have a general strategy question that seems to arise a lot in the lower levels of SnG's. I currently play the 3.40's on Stars and am flummoxed by these situations.
Very often (almost 50% of the time) The table progresses through the blinds and we reach the blind level of 75/150 or 100/200 with 6+ players. The stacks will look something like BB 150 Hero (t1600) Villain (t1000) Villain2 (t900) Villain3 (t3000) villain4 (t1400) Villain5 (t2000) Villain6 (t1300) Villian7 (t1200) or something like that. You end up with all but 2-3 players acting as short stacks, and 7 or even 8 handed action. I'm comfortable with playing short stackedwith 4-5 villians, but I'm unsure of my decisions when more players are in the mix. Assuming 10BB's for Hero an 7-handed action, and a push/fold strategy, What hands would you push from UTG or UTG+1? What hands would you push with no limpers or raise from CO or Button? What hands would you push from the button with 2+ limpers? What hands wouldyou push from the BB or SB facing one raiser? Sorry for the multitude of questions, but I'm feeling fairly lost in this area. I'll post my own answers, which could be way too tight or too loose, I honestly don't know. Danny |

Re: Playing the short stack with 6+ left
Ok, from UTG or UTG+1, I'm trying to play pretty tight given that there are 5 or 6 random hands behind me. I push A8s+, AT+, 77+, KQ and KJ.
from CO or Button with no limpers, I have just 2 or 3 random hands to worry about, and the odds of just stealing the blinds is greater, so I loosen up. Push A5s+, A8+, PP, K8(s or o)+, any two suited cards T+. from Button with 2+ limpers, I tighten up because the odds of being called (particularly by a Ax or a PP) increases. Don't want to be dominated, want to do the dominating, so push AT+, 77+, KQ. In the BB or SB facing a single raiser, I push even tighter, because obviously the raiser has shown strength. WIth no reads, I push TT+, AT+, KQ. Again, these may be far too tight, or maybe even too loose, I'd really like to see what kidn of hands the more experienced players would be playing here. |

Come on, haven'tyou seen ocean's 12? I give back all the money, as well as humiliating a frenchie. That definitely merits a response, lest I drop from an elevator shaft into your stars account and gogogogo with your $ and FPPs.

Re: Playing the short stack with 6+ left
I think you're pushing too wide a range, just from a cursory glance, especially from UTG.

Perhaps a better line from UTG or UTG+1 would be
AJ+, TT+, KQs? |

Re: Playing the short stack with 6+ left
You're still pushing too wide. KQs is way too loose with 7 players left to act and you have a little more than 10x BB. TT+ AQ+ looks good from UTG/UTG+1
Buy SNG-PT and study it. |

Re: Playing the short stack with 6+ left
Thanks for the advice. I'm starting to realize that I will want tools like SNGPT for any level above the 3.40's I'm playing.
What are your thoughts about the CO/Button with no limpers? You loosen up as your blind-stealing chances increase, but am I loosening up too much? Again, any thoughts greatly appreciated. |
